The Overland Park Host Lions Club is heavily involved with our local community. The following identifies some of the activities and organizations we support:
- Eye examinations and glasses for school children
In coordination with local school nurses, we conduct vision screenings of elementary and pre-school children during the schoool year. So far, we have screened approximately 10,000 children, teachers, and school nurses.
Needy chidren are referred to our club by the school nurses of the Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley, and Olathe school districts. We coordinate obtaining vouchers from the state of Kansas to assist with in-depth examinations and glasses.
In addition we provide eye exams and glasses via the Kansas University Medical Center's Ophthalmology Department for local individuals in need.
- Metcalf Avenue of Flags
We raise over 350 flags along Metcalf Avenue 6 times a year. We do this as a patriotic service to our community and as a fund raiser for our service activites. Local Boy Scouts, members of the Military Officers of America Association and Hy-Vee employees assist us with the raising and lowering of the flags.
- Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB)
Funds were raised to create a $120,000 endowment fund to provide track and field programs to children attending KSSB. Club members volunteer to assist with the running of multi-state track meets. We have just launched a new program to help fund an Assistive Technology Loan Library.
- Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead
The club has funded the installation of audio domes and descriptive braille signs to provide visually impared visiters with an understanding of the exhibits. We have also donated multiple benches aquired through our plastics recycling efforts.
- Children's Center for the Visually Impaired
CCVI is one of the premiere pre-schools for the blind. It serves the Kansas City regional area and is located just south of Crown Center. Funds are donated to this worthy school. Club members volunteer to help during the annual Trolley Run, CCVI's largest fund raiser and one of the largest 10 kilometer races in the nation.
- Salvation Army
We support the Salvation Army each year at Christmas time via Club and individual member contributors.
- Service Dog Programs
We support several programs that provide dogs to individuals with special needs.
- Plastic Recycling
We collect stretchable plastics such as plastic bags and plastic wrapping material from individuals, grocery stores, car dealerships, and department stores. The collected plastic is recycled into park benches that are placed in various parks and walkways in Overland Park.
